Serena Lim - DanceVersity Faculty
Serena Anuhea Hui Lim began studying
Polynesian dance in 1994, at age eight, under the direction
of Kumu Hula (Hula master) Mahealani Uchiyama. She quickly
fell in love with the grace, strength and soul of Hawaiian
Hula and Tahitian Ori. After several years of study, Serena
became a member of Mahea Uchiyama’s professional troupe,
Halau Ka Ua Tuahine Polynesian Dance Company. She has
performed all over the Bay Area and visited O’ahu several
times to compete in the King Kamehameha Hula Competition and
learn from some of Hawaii’s most revered kumu and
practitioners at the ‘Aha Hula ‘O Halauaola hula conference.
She has travelled to Tahiti and Mo’orea to participate in
cultrual exchanges with the award-winning Tahitian troupe,
Ori Here, and has competed in the annual San Jose Tahiti
Fête.
Serena is now an alaka'i (lead dancer) of Halau Ka Ua
Tuahine and currently teaches all levels of Hula at the
Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance, in Berkeley.
She is devoted to studying and teaching not only the
movement, but also the history, stories and cultural
significance behind Hawaiian and Tahitian dances.
