Kompiang Davies - DanceVersity Instructor

Ni Luh Kompiang Metri Davies was born in Karangasem, Bali, Indonesia. She was educated at Mahasaraswati University, Denpasar, Bali. She came to the US in 1992, and has received resident status.

Beginning at age five, Kompiang received training from teachers at the Academy of Art of Dancing in Denpasar. She continued informal lessons throughout high school and college, with teachers from the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture in Bali, and with teachers from the private High School she attended. Recently she has studied with professors visiting the US from the Academy of Art of Dancing.

Her dance repertoire includes the Calonarang, Margapati, Condong, Oleg Tamulilingan, Teruna Jaya, and many more.

In Bali, Kompiang danced in school and temple celebrations and was the most requested dancer for all occasions at Mahasaraswati University when she was a student there.

Kompiang is a member of Gamelan Sekar Jaya of El Cerrito, CA, and plays music with that group as well as dancing in all of their performances. She has performed with the American Indonesian Friendship Association since 1992, and with Shadowlight Productions and California Contemporary Dancers. She also performs in events such as the Ethnic Dance Festival, and Indonesian holiday festivals.

Kompiang is available for weekend and evening performances. Special appearances during work hours can also be arranged. Kompiang teaches dance in the Bay Area, on a casual basis. She is also available for Balinese and Indonesian language lessons. She lives with her husband and manager, Ralph Davies, in Oakland, CA.

Kompiang is the choreographer and dancer of Dudley Brooks's musical composition Lithe Spirit.
