Katy Alaniz Rous - DanceVersity Instructor
Katy Alaniz is an SF native who has studied over 30 styles of cultural dance here and abroad. She started studying Samba at 5 with Escola Nova de Samba and performed in her first SF carnival at age 8. Since then she has performed with professional Samba troupes in SF and New York as well as dancing as a Pasista in Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.
Katy studied other dances from the African Diaspora with notable practitioners such as Nzingha Camara (West African), Michele Martin and Mikerline Piere (Haitian), Malonga Casquelourd (Congolese), Teresita Dome-Perez (Afro-Cuban), Temistocles Fuentes Betancourt (Cuban-Haitian). Additionally she has danced with many companies of the African Diaspora in NY, LA and SF. After completing her degree in World Arts and Cultures from UCLA she formed her company World Dance Fusion in 2001, as a culmination of her years of study. She has taught workshops and presented choreography in Spain, Brazil, Guam, India, Pakistan, NY, LA and SF. In 2007 the US government invited Katy to be an Ambassador for Dance. She is also the artistic director of The Jewish Nutcracker (holiday production) that utilizes over 15 styles of cultural dance.
