Karen G Guzman - DanceVersity Instructor
Karen G Guzman has been a dance student for 8 years. Her passion for dance came about by pure chance. She took her first dance class sophomore year of high school, taking beginning and intermediate modern dance. She continued dancing through high school being introduced to foundational and popular dance styles such as Ballet, Jazz, and Hip Hop; and was a member of Dance Production from 2004-2006. Attending Mills College gave her the opportunity to dabble in different forms of dance ranging from Argentine Tango, Hula, to Afro-Latin Jazz and Dunham Technique while simultaneously furthering her education in dance by taking classes such as Music for the Dancer, Intro to Choreography, Dance Cultures, etc.
Her interest and talent came naturally in regards to Hip Hop. Her first exposure to Hip Hop was learning New School Style alongside her peers in high school. It was not until college that she learned about the foundations of Hip Hop dance and culture. Dancing at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center in Berkeley has enabled her to study Hip Hop under her mentor Jessica Wolf. Not only was her education furthered in terms of historical information and movement, but also as being given the opportunity to teach as a Hip Hop dance teacher. Currently, she has taught children ages 9-11, teens, and adults, as well as recently teaching as a guest for Shawl-Anderson’s Hip Hop Teen Intensive.
