Aya Safia - DanceVersity Instructor
Aya Safia grew up surrounded by Greek music and dance. Her parents played with a Greek band that performed for Greek church festivals around California. As a young girl, she watched the traditional dance classes that preceded her parents' performances, and quickly began to learn the steps. In 2004 she took classes at the “Balkan Music and Dance Workshops” in Mendocino taught by Joe Graziosi, and in 2005 she attended a workshop series in San Francisco taught by Yannis Konstantinou. She also joined the “Meltemi” dance group of the Church of Ascension in Oakland for the 2007 Folk Dance Festival, an annual Greek dance competition.
In 2007 Aya traveled to Greece and Bulgaria and immersed herself in the traditional dance culture. In 2013, she returned to Greece to focus specifically on music and dance from the islands. Aya is not only a dancer, but also a professional musician and educator. She believes that sharing knowledge is one of the most important responsibilities as a musician and dancer.
