Afsaneh Art & Culture Society (AACS) serves the Central Asian, Iranian- and Afghan-American communities and people who appreciate art from all cultures. AACS programs provide eloquent testimony to the unique Central Asian expressive arts and promote appreciation for the diverse expressions of our mutual humanity.

Originally founded in 1986 as a performing arts ensemble Ballet Afsaneh by Director Sharlyn Sawyer, the organization incorporated in 1991 as a non-profit. Over its twenty six year history the organization’s mission has evolved and broadened in scope. Now in addition to the professional performance ensemble, AACS provides community education programs, publications in various media, international exchange projects, collaborations, and fiscal sponsorship for the projects of associated Central Asian arts groups. Through this work Afsaneh Art & Culture Society seeks to promote positive visibility for the Central Asian community, preserve cultural assets for future generations, and to enrich the creative legacy of the expressive arts on the world stage.

DanceVersity is a program of AACS and we are excited to announce some new projects on the horizon!

Starting in May 2018, DanceVersity is excited to be partnering with the Oakland International High School  and dance professionals to introduce an immersive dance offering for 9th and 10th grader students.  Oakland International High School provides quality alternative education to recently arrived immigrant students in English language acquisition and preparation for college.  It is home to youth representing 30+ languages and cultures.

This summer (2018), DanceVersity hopes to partner with ARTogether – a resource center for the refugee community, providing free creative arts instruction and supplies within a setting that supports social gathering, human connection, and community-building.  ARTogether stands alone as the only creative arts program in the San Francisco Bay Area that specifically serves refugees.  Our vision is to integrate the DanceVersity dance curriculum with the arts and crafts activities that ARTogether offers during our summer camps and offer scholarships to refugee youth in the Bay Area.
